Our Living Curriculum

Our living curriculum offers the opportunity to learn and experience, on many different levels, the skills and lessons of life taught through the richly diverse culture of Brazos de Dios.

Brazos de Dios serves as a vocational and educational center not only for the many families who reside here, but for our entire fellowship. Our agricultural community presents the ideal context for the home education of children. Each part of their comprehensive studies forms an integrated part of a cohesive whole, teaching and strengthening every positive aspect of their being—spiritual, physical, intellectual and emotional. Their learning becomes real and important and their experiences concrete and practical.

They also develop a keen sense that their lives and education work in tandem with the life and purposes of the community of which they form a vital part. For instance, one of the older boys took the initiative to learn how to make a harness for our draft horses. He combined his leatherworking and mathematical skills with his personal knowledge of horse farming to produce a harness we now use regularly.

To provide a showroom for our craftsmen’s work, several boys, aged fourteen through twenty−two, spent their summer helping our carpenters dismantle and move a 200−year−old Dutch barn from its original New Jersey location. Replacing each beam one at a time, they reconstructed the massive hand−hewn chestnut frame and completely restored the building inside and out. It now showcases our furniture and handcrafted gifts.

As we all incorporate the traditional patterns of homestead living into our daily lives, we find ourselves, young and old alike, amid a "living curriculum" that unfolds before us daily. As each of us presses forward, our course calls forth the dormant gifts in each of us. At the same time, our common course collectively brings these gifts and skills together into a larger, more meaningful context as we move in response to the needs within our community.

Hearthstone Crafted Curriculum™

We began developing the Hearthstone Crafted Curriculum™ over a decade ago in response to the needs of home−schooling families in our community. We wanted a Biblically sound curriculum that would strengthen homes and deepen relationships between parents and children. Instead of supplanting the parent as teacher, it would serve as a tool for learning, yet would be simple to use, easy to follow and not too time−consuming to prepare or teach. In an orderly and thorough manner, it would cover the basic knowledge our children needed, yet be flexible enough to meet the diverse needs of each child.

  • Christian Character
  • Phonics & Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Writing
  • Arithmetic
  • Knowing Creation Nature Study
  • Homestead How-To's
  • Craft Kits / Patterns
  • Scripture Songs

We wanted the children who were taught with this curriculum to become responsible young adults who walk in Christian integrity. We also wanted them to be equipped to discern the critical issues of our times and to enter into effective dialogue both with those who are uninformed and with those who oppose or distort the truth. With these goals before us, we undertook the task of writing and developing the comprehensive curriculum that we now offer to all home schoolers. The task of the craftsman, it has been said, is to "make well what needs making—for the love of God and for the service of our fellow men and women." We aim in Hearthstone Crafted Curriculum™ to produce the highest possible quality, crafting the curriculum in order to glorify God and serve our fellow men and women.
